New role for Settle-Carlisle railway?

Thursday 26 February 2004

YORKSHIRE Dales railway enthusiasts were today examining with close interest a Government-backed announcement that could have profound affects on the future operations of the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

The Strategic Rail Authority this morning announced future plans for the operation of rural rail services which would involve local people taking a much larger role in their organisation.

As the most famous scenic line in the UK, the Settle-Carlisle has always had strong backing from local enthusiasts - and would probably have been closed down altogether by the former British Rail but for a vigorous campaign by the Friends of the Settle Carlisle Railway.

Under the SRA plans, local bodies will have a much more powerful voice in planning things like time-tables and organising train-bus links, giving an integrated transport system which was promised by the Government when first elected - but never delivered.
