Confusion continues on new farm payments

Monday 23 August 2004

MASSIVE reforms to the notorious Common Agricultural Policy system of farm subsidies are continuing to cause widespread confusion, according to the Country Land and Business Association.

And farmers are being urged to check the progress of their claims through the Rural Payments Agency or risk losing out on long-established payment rights.

According to the CLA, some 6,000 farmers have yet to receive information statements outlining their "historic entitlement" payments, money which in extreme cases could tip the balance between solvency or bankruptcy.

Farmers and landowners who have not yet received this information are urged to ring the agency’s helpline on 0845 601 0845.

Says Yorkshire CLA director Dorothy Fairburn: "It is possible that farmers may be so busy, during this dreadful harvest period, that they overlook these information statements but it could be essential to their future farm viability. It is critical that they are thoroughly checked and that they are returned within the 28 day deadline too."
