Buy British for St George’s Day

Tuesday 20 April 2004

A countryside body campaigning to raise the profile of St George’s, which the English rarely celebrate in the way that the Celtic nations honour their patron saints, is asking the Government to declare it a day for buying English food.

The Country Land and Business Association funded an opinion poll survey a week ago which showed that only 18% of English men and 25% of women knew that this Friday (April 23) is St George’s Day.

Now, Lord Grantchester, speaking in the House of Lords, is asking the Government to make future St Georges’s Days an occasion when only English produced food is served in institutions like schools, hospitals and armed services camps.

The demand is part of the CLA’s Think Local, Buy Local, Act Local campaign designed to persuade people to buy more food from local shops and farms. It is particularly apt because St George is also the patron saint of farm workers.
