Regional help for 1,000 rural firms

Thursday 15 July 2004

THE REGIONAL development agency, Yorkshire Forward, is celebrating helping 1,000 small rural businesses at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

In the past five years, the agency has invested £5.5 million in the 23 towns participating in the Renaissance Market Towns project, a pioneering 10-year plan to support sustainable small towns across the region, ensuring that the region's 'rural capitals' are places where people want to live, work, invest and visit.

More than 130 young entrepreneurs have benefited from a number of projects, including ROSE - Rural Opportunities for Self Employment - which last year helped 100 people start and grow a business and the Yorkshire Forward funded Growing Routes programme, which has already supported 20 young entrepreneurs from rural areas.

And more than 300 firms across the region received Information Communication Technology (ICT) support from Yorkshire Forward last year, including nearly 200 who now have access to satellite broadband.

Agency staff will be on hand today to give advice to would-be rural business people at their marquee on Avenue E, stand 610.
