Nature begins at home

Monday 07 June 2004

THE DOMESTIC garden has in recent years become one of the most important sanctuaries for British wildlife and English Nature has just opened a website to allow gardeners - and their children - to look, learn and love what they see.

Urban development, road building and some intensive farming methods have made huge chunks of our countryside less attractive to many birds and even mammal species and, increasingly, they have taken refuge in our gardens.

But Government-funded English Nature feels that many families will derive even more pleasure from this wildlife invasion is they have more knowledge of what they can do to promote an even better garden environment.

The new site is particularly children friendly, with hints on how to grow plants which will attract natural predators - thus cutting down on the use of pesticides - how to make your own compost, reducing the need for artificial fertilisers, and how to feed wild birds with a healthy diet.
