Dales’ doughty defender

Wednesday 03 March 2004

ONE of the Yorkshire Dales’ doughtiest defenders, Earl Peel, is to chair a meeting on Friday which is expected to launch an outspoken attack on Government hopes for a Yorkshire Regional Assembly.

The earl, who is a direct descendent of Victorian Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, founder of the police force, lives near Masham and for many years has given his high-profile support to defending the interests of the Dales and their people.

In the House of Lords last week, Lord Peel launched a blistering attack on John Prescott’s plans for a regional “parliament”, saying it would drive a wedge between town and country folk and be a total disaster for North Yorkshire.

Friday’s meeting, which will be attended by Conservative party shadow ministers with responsibilities for the countryside, is at the Swallow St George Hotel, Ripon Road, Harrogate, starting 6.30 pm.
