HUNDREDS of Yorkshire farmers and landowners are living in a state of confusion as Europe’s notorious Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is being re-negotiated.
Defra will not announce its new subsidy system until next spring, which means that farmers are finding it “nigh-on-impossible” to plan their production over the next few years.
For those who are anxious to glean what information is available, a special seminar has been arranged at the Great Yorkshire Show on July 13 when one of Britain’s leading rural economists, Professor Allan Buckwell, will discuss the implications of the new single farm payment system, which will replace subsidies based on the size of a farm rather than its production figures.
The seminar, which starts at 2.30pm in The Pavilions, is being organised by the Country Land and Business Association. People wishing to reserve tickets should ring 01347 823803.
