Battle flares over green-field building
Monday 20 January 2003

THE long running battle over massive housing developments on green-field sites is expected to flare again his week with Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and the Council for the Protection of Rural England going head to head.

Prescott, who is in overall control of environmental development, has been promising to drastically reduce green field building ever since Labour came to power, saying he will force developers to increase the density of homes on open fields and devote much more time to cleaning up derelict brown-field sites.

He will announce major decisions on this policy in mid-week - but is likely to be met with a storm of protest from bodies like the CPRE.

They have carried out a county-by-county study of planning permissions granted for green-field sites - and it is believed to show that an area of open countryside the size of several big cities is due to go under the bulldozers.
