Yorkshire market town renaissance launched
Tuesday 14 January 2003

A TEN-year project to breath life back into Yorkshire's market towns was announced yesterday - with the Calder Valley of West Yorkshire leading the way.

But the organisers, Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, promise that this will soon be followed by a similar project in Skipton, the first North Yorkshire town to be targeted.

Yorkshire Forward will spend £2.8 million on its Renaissance Market Towns Initiative, which will allow experts to study problems in small towns and come up with proposals to stop a decline which has been going on for many years in some areas.

However, the first three communities chosen to take part, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, barely meet the description of "market towns" in some observers' eyes: they are all former mill towns in a heavily populated area of the old West Riding, not usually regarded as a largely rural area.
