Sainsbury's £8 Labour party gift angers farmers

Tuesday 01 April 2003

FARMERS' leaders trying to negotiate better prices from the big four supermarket companies were outraged today when it was revealed that Lord Sainsbury, head of the second biggest chain, has donated a total of £8.5 million to the Labour party.

Lord Sainsbury is Minister For Science in the present government, having been appointed personally by the Prime Minister, but has always strenuously denied that the post gives him any extra influence in the long-running row over payments to food producers which are so low as to leave many of them at the point of bankruptcy.

The revelation that his latest £1-million-plus donation takes the total to over £8million could not have come at a worst time.

Last week officials from the Office of Fair Trading failed to turn up to a meeting of food producers to discuss the failings of a code of practice drawn up with Government support designed to ensure fair returns for growers - but which the CLA claims is not working.
