The CLA has repeated its claim that the Government's aim to revitalise the rural economy by attracting business into the countryside will be dead on its feet if plans to privatise the postal service results in a poorer service in rural areas.
In an effort to underline the importance of an efficient rural postal service the CLA is calling for all rural voters to send a postcard of their local towns and villages to Postcomm making their views known. The deadline for submissions is Friday April 12 and all cards should be sent to: Ms Tasneem Azad, Deputy Director, Competition and Regulation Directorate, Postcomm, Hercules House, Hercules Road London SE1 7DB
CLA's northwest regional director Douglas Chalmers said: "We have heard directly from Consignia that it intends to do everything possible to safeguard rural post offices.
"But as long as the matter is under consultation we must take the opportunity to make our views known, to ensure that they are considered when the final decision is made."
- The sting in the Consignia tail. The future of rural post offices will be the subject of our Week in the Country feature tomorrow
