NFU moves to meet critics
Monday 18 March

THE National Farmers' Union is to radically alter its constitution next month in a move seen as an answer to growing internal criticism from its own members.

As we reported last week, NFU president Ben Gill, who farms at Easingwold, near York, denies that there is a serious rift within the union - but the new moves are planned to make it more sensitive to members' views and needs.

Changes will include a 12 member national board, bigger roles for county chairman, a new public relations committee, and more consultation with members.

Said Mr Gill: "In today's rapidly moving society, the creation of a board will give a much greater strength to the direction of the NFU on a day-to-day basis."
