THE row over plans to close ten YHA
hostels throughout the country - two of them in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
- hotted up over the weekend when the Ramblers' Association
expressed its "deep regret" over the closures.
Linton Youth Hostel - Planned for closure
The YHA is £4 million in debt, largely due to losses caused by last year's foot and mouth crisis, and is planning to sell the properties involved. The Dales are the only national park facing the potential loss of two hostels - at Linton and Aysgarth - and the plans have already been condemned by the national park authority and North Yorkshire County Council
At a ramblers meeting in Newcastle, an emergency resolution was passed urging the YHA to do everything in its power to provide alternative bed space - and asking local authorities and regional development agencies to step in to save hostels which "are vital to bring spending back to the rural economy."
