The first swallow of spring - Official!
Monday 11 March

Swallow SPRING must be on its way - despite all the evidence against it - because the first swallow to arrive in the UK from South Africa has been spotted on the Kent coast.

And a much rarer immigrant, the magnificent fish-eating osprey, has also been recorded at North Kessock, in the Scottish Highlands, flying into gales and blizzards after spending winter on the coast of West Africa.

Both birds were recorded on March 1 by people taking part in the British Trust for Ornithology's new internet linked Migration Watch scheme. For more info, log onto www.bto.org/migwatch
