Farmers launch fair price fight-back
Monday 9 September

YORKSHIRE farmer Ben Gill, president of the NFU, today launched the union's massive national fight back for fair food prices - by donning an apron and setting out a farmers' market stall in central London.

His aim: to sell produce at the same prices that farmers receive and show the public the massive mark-ups imposed by wholesalers and supermarkets by the time the food goes on sale to the housewife.

Gill, who farms at Easingwold, was launching an "information blitz" outside NFU headquarters which will continue throughout the country over the coming weeks called the Farming Counts Campaign.

The NFU believes that the public blames high food prices on farmers whereas, in fact, the vast profits involved go to supermarkets and middlemen.
