BOGUS "consultants" are believed to be cashing in on the after effects of foot and mouth to offer so-called advice on how to get EU recovery grants - and charging big fees, it was revealed today.
"The people offering this advice it could be phonies," said Dorothy Fairburn, Yorkshire regional director of the Country Land and Business Association in the county.
Miss Fairburn said that the association had received reports from members that bogus consultants were operating in Yorkshire.
"We are very worried about this," said Miss Fairburn. "Our members are vulnerable to people offering access to cash aid after the effects of the foot and mouth disease. The grants available - and they are wide ranging - are offered free of charge.
"We strongly recommend farmers and landowners to be wary of people knocking on the door. If they are approached by any consultant offering European grant aid, they should ask for identification and if possible, references.
"These can be checked. The message really is: 'Do not sign over any money.'
