In between rehearsing for their famed annual Christmas Dickensian festival production, members of Grassington Players are also busy this autumn putting together plans for next year's 80th anniversary celebrations.
Founded in 1923 the local thespians have been entertaining with laughter and tears, the dale and audiences further afield in touring productions, with a variety of plays and shows ever since. Generally the Players have put on two or three productions a year since their first performance of a quartet of one act plays.
Rachel Steventon the current Chairman of the Players, and stalwart performer for 25 years is keen to contact as many old members as possible to be involved in the forthcoming anniversary activities.
Peter Whittaker, another performing member has spent many hours researching the history of the group in order to publish an anniversary publication about the Grassington Players. "It has been hard work, but enormous fun trawling through many old and dusty boxes of playbills and re-living many memories, and it would be wonderful to be able to interview some of the former members, particularly the older ones who have retired or those who have left the area." he says.
"We'd like them to be able to come to the 80th Anniversary dinner/dance party to be held on 1st February, to mark the first ever meeting of the Players", Rachel adds. The event will be held in the Town Hall at Grassington, which has been home to the Players productions for their 80 year history.
In April the Players will stage an impressive production of 'Allo 'Allo, the second world war farce set in France, which will involve a large cast and hopefully involve many old and new members alike.
