Heatwave brings new threat for hedgehogs
Mon 30 July

BRITAIN’S dwindling population of hedgehogs is facing a new threat from the current heatwave – and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society is appealing for human help.

The main problem is water, so leave out a couple of shallow containers, but hard ground also makes it difficult for the animals to dig for their food. The society is appealing for people to leave out a little dog or cat food or some chopped nuts.

Finally, there is a growing danger from garden ponds, which attract thirsty animals. Hedgehogs are good swimmer, says the society, but cannot climb out of ponds if the water is low and the sides too slippery. So do Mr Prickles a favour and keep your pond topped up!
