Green light for Kettlewell community building
Tues 23 October

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority's property committee has given the green light for a planning application to go forward for a new Kettlewell Visitor and Community building.

The new building, subject to planning approval, will be a 'Green Point' incorporating modern and accessible toilet facilities, a community office, a covered bus shelter and public transport information.

The decision was taken after the Authority drew up new plans for the building following a community open day that gave Kettlewell residents the opportunity to view and discuss the initial plans for the landmark building, on the national park car park in Kettlewell. The new design has the backing of the Kettlewell Parish Council.

When built, the Kettlewell Visitor and Community building will solve the problem of Kettlewell's current public toilets, which have long been criticised. The project has been made possible after Craven District Council agreed to pay for new public toilets in the village.

Jon Avison, head of park management, commented: "We would like to thank all of the Kettlewell residents who took the time to comment on our original designs for what everyone agreed is a much needed building.

"The comments from the open day have allowed us to go back to our architects and give them a brief more in line with the community's wishes, which have now been approved to go forward for planning permission. In the coming months we will be able to start work on an exciting new building that will integrate the new toilets with other community facilities, which will benefit both residents and visitors."

Unless there are any unexpected hitches, work could start In February 2002.
