The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is asking people to look in their attics, sheds or garages for any walking paraphernalia from the early 20th Century.
The call has gone out for old walking boots, outdoor clothing, maps or guides for inclusion in an exhibition that will celebrate the rights of way in the national park over the years. The exhibition will be housed at Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes and is planned to run from February through to March next year.
The exhibition is one of a number of events the park is planning to encourage the public back to the National Park after the foot and mouth crisis this year.
Fiona Rosher, manager of the Dales Countryside Museum, said: "The exhibition will celebrate the travelling past of the Dales, exploring how today's footpaths, bridleways and byways came into being and how they developed into today's public rights of way network.
"To bring the exhibition alive we are on the lookout for all kinds of walking memorabilia, from old boots, maps or guides of the area or even old backpacks."
Anyone wanting to contribute something to the exhibition should contact the Dales Countryside Museum on 01969 667450, all items will be treated with care and returned in April 2002.
